Dr. Cathryn Starr Celebrates 20 Years

Help us congratulate Dr. Starr on her 20 Years at The Cat Care Clinic. We are lucky to have her on our veterinary team where she shares her great feline care experience. We look forward to many more years of working with her.

“When I started at The Cat Care Clinic, we just had the one space with two exam rooms. As the clinic has grown over the years, I have grown with it, thanks to the example and support of Dr. Wexler-Mitchell. It has been my privilege and pleasure for these past 20 years to be a part of such an extraordinary veterinary practice, devoted to caring for our fabulous feline friends!”

Current Clinical Trials

clinical trial photoAt The Cat Care Clinic we strive to be on the cutting edge of new therapies for cats. At this time, the clinic is participating in two national trials.

Diabetes
This trial is looking at an oral therapy for Diabetic Cats that replaces injectable insulin. For participation we are seeking newly diagnosed diabetic cats that have never been treated for this condition.

Anemia in Cats
This trial involves a drug that treats anemia in cats with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Anemia is a complication of CKD and can have a profound effect on the energy and quality of life of affected patients.

If you think your kitty might qualify for a trial and want more information, please call the clinic and ask to speak to our trial coordinator, Erika Flint Perez, RVT.

estate planning for your catEstate Planning 101 for Kitties

Dr. Wexler-Mitchell previously addressed this topic in an article in The Orange County Register. It’s something that is often overlooked by owners who love their cats dearly. We recently had contact with family, friends, and caretakers that didn’t know what to do with the cat of someone who had passed away. Having a plan for an unexpected event would be similar to an insurance policy you hope that you never have to use. A great start in the process would be to click and read the following:

Your Furniture’s New Best Friend

It is not uncommon for us to hear about problems with destructive clawing of furniture during annual exam visits. While we work with behavior strategies to solve these problems, the most effective solution is stopping the problem before it starts.

Feliscratch is a new product designed to get cats to focus on scratching a post instead of the furniture. Feliscratch trains kittens and cats to use scratching posts by using a copy of the pheromone naturally left behind when cats scratch things. Research showed that 90% of cats introduced into homes using Feliscratch never started destructive scratching. Through the end of March 2018, we are offering special pricing on Feliscratch if you mention this newsletter.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month

While you might associate the month of February with Presidential day holidays, at The Cat Care Clinic we’d like you to associate February with your cat’s teeth.

We mention dentistry frequently because it is crucial to overall pet health and comfort. Preventive dental care for cats is ideal, but when a patient has gum disease, damaged or infected teeth, or other oral problems, things become more complicated. We recommend dental diets, such as Prescription Diet t/d, as a first line preventive against dental disease.

We assess your kitty’s teeth at every routine visit and let you know when intervention is needed. Our team of veterinarians and Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT’s) provide thorough dental services. Our dental RVT’s have extensive training including traveling to hands on workshops with nationally renowned veterinary dentists to stay current on the latest dental techniques.

Be Sure Your Cat Has A Chip

microchip your catEvery time a cat comes into the clinic, we scan for a microchip. The importance of having permanent identification was exemplified with the numerous wildfires in California at the end of last year. We’ve all read the stories about owners getting separated from their pets during these fast moving events. It is extremely important for your cat to have some type of identification for emergency situations. Microchips are a safe, easy, and permanent method for identifying your kitty if unforeseen circumstances arise and force separation. We can place a microchip during any clinic visit. It is painless, only takes a few seconds, and can make a difference in recovering your special friend. Microchip details >>
